Okay, so you’ve decided to take on your first major DIY project. This is a great idea – you will save money, learn plenty of skills, have fun and end up with a unique new addition to your home or garden that you’ll be proud of. But it quite probably seems rather daunting, so here’s a little guide as a way to hold your hand and lead you in the right direction:
There are many safety issues to think about when undertaking a DIY project. The first of these is the environment in which you’re working. Make sure you’re well out of the way of any children or animals who could unexpectedly get hold of a tool or toxic liquid. It is extremely important to work in a well-ventilated space because paint and fumes from other DIY equipment are potentially lethal if inhaled. And if you are working with power tools or going up ladders, think about letting somebody know or asking a friend or partner to join in and help.
Shopping online has revolutionised the way you can buy tools – many websites have discounts far greater than those in a high-street store. One option is to go and have a look in a large shop at a retail park and try some of the different tools. Then simply write down the names or search for them on your smartphone, and chances are they’ll be cheaper online. For larger materials such as wood, metal and glass, it’s best to look around local shops for the cheapest deals and best quality.
There are certain things that all DIY-ers should never be without, and the first thing to get hold of is a decent tool kit. If this is a serious project that you’re going to undertake, then you must have a well-stocked selection of tools. It is always worth spending a bit more money if possible and not going for bargain tools, which are more accident prone and never last as long. Buy quality equipment and you will save money over time for this reason. Start by buying a hammer, a selection of screwdrivers, a Bosch drill and some pliers and then (budget permitting) think about investing in something such as a Makita LXT202, which will give you plenty of drilling and driving options and make your DIY experience a real treat.
For your first few DIY projects, you should never give yourself a time limit, as this can lead to sloppy, rushed work and can cause stress and even accidents. Just enjoy your first projects, and then once you get the hang of it you can start setting deadlines.
