The placement of the houses is determined by the time of day you were born, and how the sun and the planets are aligned in referance the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth.
The First House
Also called the Ascendant or rising sign. This is sign on the chart that the eastern (or rising) horizon is pointing to. If, for example, your risings sign was in Aries, then Aries would be your ascendant and it is placed in your first house. The second house in this example would be Taurus, the third in Gemini, and the rest of the houses after the third would be in this order: Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and then Pisces would be in the twelveth house.
